It was a welcome opportunity for me to interview a young artist, Siriratda Noiwichai, who resides in Kalasin Province, from the north, central part of the Isan region of Thailand.

First of all, I had seen a beautiful oil painting in the house and gallery of Prof. Dr. Olan Suwan-apichon, Deputy Dean for Human Resources, Faculty of Medicine, Khon Kaen University. He is an interesting collector of art, including antique ceramics from China, beautiful furniture with mother-of-pearl inlays, and many other beautiful paintings from many well known artists in Thailand. I informed him that I had interviewed many male artists in the Isan region, but I had never had the opportunity to interview a female artist from Isan. Prof. Dr. Olan Suwan-apichon gave me her name,  and it offered me an interview that reflected the current beauty of Isan art, which has a distinct and modern culture that is no less than any other region in Thailand.

JY. Please tell me about your childhood

SN. What I first remember is the first picture I drew was a white vase with blue flower lines. I sat and played with my father and saw that the vase was beautiful, so I drew it for him. He complimented me on how beautiful it was, which made me want to draw all the time. When I was in elementary and secondary school, I was often selected to be a representative in drawing competitions and always won awards and praises. So, I understood that this might be a talent that I had since I was a child. When I was in high school, I chose to study science and mathematics because my aunt suggested that after I graduated, I could continue my studies in nursing. At that time, the careers of teachers, nurses, doctors, and police officers were popular and were the pride of every parent. When their children graduated, they would become civil servants. As for the career of an artist, there was always the question of what to do after graduation with the words "being a broke artist" attached to it. Therefore, this career was not popular and was always overlooked. However, after I finished high school, I began to understand that I did not like becoming a nurse. I thought that even though it was a career with a lovely image, my daily work would encounter depressing images, being with with sick people, death, and sadness. So, I decided to study tourism and hospitality because I thought that I could work in many other fields, such as tourism, the hotel business, or even as a flight attendant. However, after studying for oneyear, there was a major economic problem in Thailand during that time. I thought to myself that I would definitely not have a job after graduating. So I decided to transfer to study at the Faculty of Fine Arts, Department of Visual Arts, Painting Major, Maha Sarakham University because it was probably the faculty that best matched my abilities. I thought that after graduating, I would become an art
teacher.

The path to working in art therefore began here. After life had taken many detours, fate pulled me back to what I should be and to do what I love. I came to study painting full-time with an attraction and talent for painting. However, I did not have any basic skills or knowledge in art because I had left it for a long time. So, everything started all over again. When I started studying, the work was very hard, but I felt happy and I could stay with this painting all day and night. The first artist's painting that inspired me was the Songkran painting of ProfessorSompop Budtarad. It was an extremely beautiful painting. I felt that I had to be able to paint like the teacher, even though at that time my skills in painting people were very bad. However, I continued to practice because I really liked painting people, especially women.

JY. The influence of people in Kalasin Province and the Northeastern group on art and culture, such as singing, dancing, or other performances that play a role in people's current lives, which affects their own creations. The goal of my life is that I want to tell Thais and foreigners about, and I want readers to see is the direction of creativity to stimulate and elevate thoughts and abilities, and create hope for Thai society.

SN. While I was a student, the form of my work was always related to images of women. Inspired by Isan dancers, I am impressed by the unique and beautiful costumes of Isan dancers and the fun hidden in them. In addition, there are also young women from Isan literature that inspire me. I worked on projects related to Isan women during my bachelor's and master's degrees. After graduating, I was still interested in drawing and had the opportunity to show my works to my friends often. This has led to people being interested in my works and supporting me all along. I believe that being an artist allows me to survive, so I have chosen to be a painter and artist.

My paintings are related to women, flowers, and silk to convey the soft and sweet feelings, the beauty of women, and the unique local dressing culture. The technique used for painting is oil painting on canvas, a combination of realism and impressionism, emphasizing the unique light in the work, and letting the brush create a dreamy atmosphere. Currently, my works are still images of women in various poses, wearing typical women's clothing and silk covering them, in order to show the contemporary and universal dressing culture, as well as telling the stories of modern women who are capable, courageous, have self-worth, and have the power to create good things. I hope that my artwork will be accepted and distributed around the world. And that it ls work that inspires many women around the world to have positive thinking, be able to do what they love, and be themselves with grace and pride.

JY. Other interesting stories, life experiences, stories of the works that you have done until now, for example

SN. I would like to thank you for this interview. It gave me the opportunity to sit and think about my life and concluded that from a child who loved to draw, not knowing what was right for me, I walked off the path many times during my school days. But in the end, fate pulled me back to the path of art again. Today, I am very happy to be able to do what I love and am good at. My heart is overflowing with art. And what is indispensable is the supporter of my work that allows me to continue in this career. Because it is not easy for everyone to make a living by drawing only. And finally, I would like to encourage all artists who have the same dream. I wish every one to be determined and succeed in their beautiful careers.
