He has much to say.
JY.
Please tell us about yourself, your family, your education, and your
interest in creating art, traveling to see work in Thailand or abroad or
participate in the exhibitions with awards received during school years.
VS.
I was born into a Chinese Thai family in Thonburi, Bangkok. I drew on
notepads, textbooks, or scrap paper. by copying from my favorite cartoons:
Doraemon and other cartoon characters. I drew a story as if creating my
own toy. When I was young, I had a dream of becoming a Manga artist. I
was lucky that my family supported me in things I liked. I saw that I liked
to draw cartoons, so I took a special drawing class in junior high school and
began to learn the art and became interested in studying history and art
history. After graduating from middle school, I enrolled for a Diploma of
Vocational Education at Saowabha Vocational College where art was taught
directly and I intended to take the entrance examination to the Faculty of
Painting Sculpture and Prints Silpakorn University. In the first year, I
couldn't take the entrance exam, so I went to study at Poh Chang School for
one year, then re-examined and entered the Faculty of Fine Arts, Silpakorn
University. While studying, I chose to major in printmaking and worked
mainly on woodcut prints.
When I was about to enter the 5th year at the Faculty of Painting, I had the
feeling that I was going to finish my studies this way as I thought I was
studying and working hard. So I decided to try to submit to a contest. When
I considered sending it, I thought that I would only send to the National
Exhibition of Art because it is the country's largest event. It was a work that
Ajarn Silpa Bhirasri initiated. For that submission, I was awarded the
National Fine Arts Gold Medal. This was quite shocking and surprising to
people at Silpakorn University because I had never submitted before
because I was still only in the 5th year and the winners of the National Art
Fair were usually teachers. For me, winning this award was an important
starting point in my life. After that, I continued my master's degree in
printmaking at Silpakorn University. I sent my paintings to the National
Art Fair every year during my master's degree Received awards for five
consecutive years: 1 gold medal, 1 silver medal, and 3 bronze medals (1st
Prize Gold Medal, Graphic Art 51st National Exhibition of Art Bangkok
Thailand 2005, 3rd Prize Bronze Medal, Graphic Art 52nd National
Exhibition of Art Bangkok Thailand 2006 , 3rd Prize Bronze Medal,
Graphic Art 53rd National Exhibition of Art Bangkok Thailand 2007 , 2nd
Prize Silver Medal, Graphic Art 54th National Exhibition of Art, Bangkok
Thailand 2008 , 3rd Prize Bronze Medal, Graphic Art 55th National
Exhibition of Art Bangkok Thailand 2009 )
During my time at Silpakorn, I liked to send my works to be exhibited
abroad.Various countries organize exhibitions of prints open to people
from all over the world. During that study period, I sent to almost every
event because I felt that getting a foreign performance record was cool.
And the selection of foreign works is quite different from Thailand. I
received an award for printmaking from Spain, Honorable Mentions, 10th
International Biennial Engraving "Josep de Ribera" Xativa, Spain 2009.
Then I graduated with a master's degree. So I stopped submitting to
contests because I was thinking of having my own exhibition instead.
Therefore, I started making works and organizing exhibitions every year. I
also had to do other jobs for extra income. I used to teach special arts to
children, drawing fairy tale illustrations for advertising. But nowadays I
don't do anything else, I draw. just do art.
JY.
What is your work with large walls in perspective and past time?
VS.
Personally, I like doing large work because I can feel the mental
collision. I love walking into a church and seeing the great frescoes
surrounding us as if we were stepping into the world of that work.
Therefore, I want my work to feel that way. In my work, I give myself full
freedom. I will not set the format or pre-formed rails. I'm not interested in
composition theory or any theory. I will draw things that interest me and
want them to be included in my work. I work with improvisation, touching
every moment of drawing, imagining, and adding things according to my
feelings and instincts. For this reason, my work will grow with me changing
my pace with my life. I want my work to be like a collection of thoughts,
memories, events, and things that happen in this world. I believe that
everything hides the truth of life and the world whether we can find it or
touch it. I want everyone to be able to feel the beauty and aesthetics that
surround us. I believe that if we see beauty in something, we won't destroy
it.
JY.
Tell me about your income. Where we can see your past work in
Thailand?
VS.
Currently, my income comes from selling my work. Most of my works
are displayed in galleries. But that is non-permanent exhibition. Some of
my work is with art collectors. Some of the murals still exist, for example in
Chiang Mai at Dream Space Gallery, in Bangkok at Gaysorn Plaza, DUKE
(actually I'm not sure if these murals are still there), and other murals.
Most of them have been removed.
JY.
What other stories would you like to share with readers around the
world? If someone is interested, how can they reach you?
VS.
In an era of urgency competing for money and success, social media
image or "likes" is a measure of people. I hope that the essence of life will
not be abandoned and I believe that the truth is timeless and still resides
within the surroundings. Just try to stop and reflect, touch with a sensitive
but determined mind. We will find beauty in everything. Aesthetics is not
an art, it is an intrinsic value. When we see and gradually accumulate the
aesthetics within, when we have, then we give.
