The War

Altenir Silva

Story-line: Somewhere in the jungle, after the war is over, two enemy soldiers, lost from their armies, will get the last round.

Scene One

Blackout.

We hear a machine gun.

Lights up. A Soldier wearing a blue uniform is rolling on the ground. He's screaming because of his chest wound. Away from him, there are his blue helmet and the gun.

A soldier in a red uniform and a red helmet comes in holding a machine gun.

The BLUE SOLDIER crawls on the ground to get his machine gun.

RED SOLDIER is aiming his machine gun at BLUE, which continues to crawl towards his gun.

RED kicks out BLUE's gun.

BLUE stops crawling but keeps screaming in pain.

BLUE

You hit me! Argh! I'm dying!

RED

Do you speak my language?

BLUE

I think so. Why?

RED

But you are an enemy.

BLUE

So?

RED

We are at war.

BLUE

The war is over.

RED

What?

BLUE

Our countries have made a peace agreement.

RED

Really?

BLUE

Yeah.

RED

Is that true?

BLUE

I swear... the war is over.

RED

Jeez... I didn't know. I got lost from my platoon.

BLUE

That explains everything. I'm lost too.

(RED lowers his machine gun.)

RED

Oh boy! How do you know the war is over?

BLUE

I heard from my lieutenant... It was before I got lost in the jungle.

RED

I don't know. I shouldn't believe you. Maybe you're waiting for your troop. They'll be here and make me. Is it?

BLUE

Of course not. I'm telling the truth.

RED

This war can't end... never...

BLUE

Why?

RED

What I'll do without this war? The inferno that I saw here, all deaths, the blood, the crazy things, all of that are stuck into my mind. I cannot get ahead with my life after all that crap.

BLUE

I understand you.

RED

The war needs to continue.

BLUE

But now it's over...

RED

What if this is a lie?

BLUE

You have to believe me.

RED

I don't know.

BLUE

Have you heard gunshots?

RED

No.

BLUE

Why? It's simple! Because the war is over.

(There's a brief silence.)

RED

Maybe you're right.

BLUE

Yeah, yeah. I'm totally right.

RED

If the war is over, then we are no longer enemies.

BLUE

Exactly.

RED

I got it. But what am I gonna do with the ghosts of war?

BLUE

You will need to get rid of it all.

RED

How?

BLUE

Doing something good.

RED

Like what?

BLUE

Helping me.

RED

What?

BLUE

I need your help... I'm hurt…

RED

What can I do?

BLUE

I'm dying... You hit me in the chest.

RED

Of course... You were my enemy.

BLUE

No more, you know.

RED

I know. So, tell me, what I can do for you…?

BLUE

I will not save myself bleeding like a pig into slaughter. I want you to end my pain.

RED

How?

BLUE

Killing me.

RED

What? I can't do it. I can't.

BLUE

But you already shot me.

RED

Yeah... you were my enemy and I didn't know about the end of war.

BLUE

Please, do the right thing.

RED

If I kill you now... I'll be a killer.

BLUE

Argh!

RED

I'm a soldier... not a murderer.

BLUE

But if you kill me now, you will stop my pain.

RED

I won't kill you.

BLUE

Please.

RED

I can try to save your life.

BLUE

I'm bleeding a lot. We're far away from civilization. I want to stop this shit.

RED

We can try to staunch the blood.

BLUE

No way. I don't want to live anymore.

RED

Neither I.

BLUE

You?

RED

I don't want to live with these war memories.

BLUE

I know.

(There's a brief silence.)

BLUE

If I tell you I lied, and the war ain't over.

RED

What're you talking about?

BLUE

We're enemies. Kill me or I'll kill you.

RED

How can you do that? The war is over.

BLUE

This war will never end.

RED

Bulshit.

BLUE

The war is eternal.

RED

You're out of your mind!

BLUE

We are in a war. We're always at war.

RED

Stop it!

(There's a brief silence.)

BLUE

Kill me.

RED

If you want to die... take my gun... do it yourself...

(Red gives his gun to Blue.)

BLUE

I can't do that.

RED

Why?

BLUE

God. He will never forgive me. I don't want to be consumed by the fire.

RED

I'm sorry!

(There's a brief silence.)

BLUE

Damn! I need to die...

RED

Me too.

(There's a brief silence)

BLUE

I've an idea.

RED

What?

BLUE

We don't want to be alive, right?

RED

Live? What for?

BLUE

I think, you know, we should get our guns and act as if the war continues and one kills the other, huh?

RED

Like a duel?

BLUE

No, no. Duel, you know, one could survive. I think that we have to shoot each one at the same time. This way, I needn't kill myself.

RED

I don't know.

BLUE

It will be easy.

RED

How is your wound?

BLUE

It is hurting so much.

RED

As you haven't died yet, it means you can be healed.

BLUE

Please, I want to die. You want it, too.

RED

Alright, alright. Let's go and make it, like a western movie.

BLUE

It is not a duel.

RED

I got it. Let's go.

(Blue gets up by himself, clinging upright to a tree.)

(Red picks up Blue's gun from the floor and hands it to him and then steps away.)

(They stand in duel position.)

RED

Should we count?

BLUE

Yeah.

RED

Ready?

BLUE

Yes.

RED

Three.

BLUE

Two.

RED

One.

(They throw their guns on the floor. Red runs toward Blue, then, the two share a long tongue kiss.)

(Blackout.)

(Lights up. We came back with them in the same positions. They are still holding their guns.)

RED

Three.

BLUE

Two.

RED

One.

(Blackout.)

(We hear gunfire.)
