Pakkawee Gangtonglang is a Thai artist in the southern Isan region.I have followed his sculptures for quite some time, and was initially interested in that the Dan Kwian soil of Nakhon Ratchasima Province is of good quality.

Dan Kwian pottery comprises many types of products such as daily utensils, agricultural equipment, and home and garden decorations including jewelry The production style clearly retains the uniqueness of Dan Kwian's local wisdom. including raw materials used for production, molding, and pattern decoration and burning to produce good quality products. But current problems such as raw materials used as fuel for burning are hard to find and have higher prices. In addition, there is the problem with the decreasing number of technicians. and lack of development of product styles with new patterns. As a result, the production of Dan Kwian pottery has not developed according to the changing times and may be at risk of being lost over time. Are there any artists interested in creating this art?

I reached out to many southern Isan artists from Nakhon Ratchasima province to Ubon Ratchathani and found Pakkawee Gangtonglang. The following is a recent interview with him.

JY. Please briefly tell us your history, studies, and work. What inspired you to become a sculptor? What tools and equipment did you begin working with?

PG. Inspiration came from an invitation from Professor Borirak. Supatraiworapong, lecturer, Sarakham Rajabhat University to join the Isaan clay group. Previously, I had always worked in painting. When I started to study about terracotta, I went to see the work and study the work from the teachers at Sarakham. When I started working with terracotta, I liked it very much and have been working with it since then. Sculpting and firing myself, I have always tried to make the firing technique and the work to be as unique as possible.

JY. Describe what brought success for the first time. How did you decide on the shape and design. and what materials and equipment were used in that work?

PG. My first successful work of terracotta won the National Art Competition No.65 bronze sculpture medal: hand-made pottery sculpture in the shape of a human being. I used Ban Moh soil, Maha Sarakham Province. This is another source of good quality soil from the province that is used in place of Dan Kwian soil, Nakhon Ratchasima Province.

JY. Sculpting involves shapes and strategies to be made from many materials. How do you choose that material?

PG. Sculpture mainly uses clay. I used to use soil that was available in the local area but was unsuccessful with the method of firing and mixing the clay used for sculpture. Therefore, I studied soil from many places, such as soil from Ban Don Chiang Ban, Sakon Nakhon Province. Soil from the wagon side Nakhon Ratchasima Province was not successful. Ban Moh soil, Maha Sarakham Province, came to mold and burn until it was successful; able to burn outdoors, so I always chose Ban Moh clay to work with.

JY. All artists are inspired by seeing various works of art from around the world. Just like you. Where do you find Concept Work that is personal to you in your work as well. How does your personal perspective on your experiences influence the work you do?

PG. Inspiration comes from the way I learn about my own life and translate it into my own work as much as possible, which uses Dhamma principles to mix in various teaching works to show my world view. of reality, such as the goodness and beauty of humans that arise and are conveyed as one's own work.

JY. There are traditional and contemporary sculptures. What is your work like? You give meaning to your work that comes from your research and personal perspective on the work using Classic techniques - traditional works. or new experiments. How do you apply it?

PG. The sculptures that are made are contemporary works. Most of the work that is done is from one's own point of view, expressed from one's own feelings. The working techniques are one's own, finding various techniques, trial and error, trial and error all the way to giving results. Come be yourself as much as possible.
