recently attended an
exhibition of the work
of Yayoi Kusama at the
National Gallery of
Victoria (NGV). Yayoi
Kusama is a Japanese
contemporary artist
known for her immersive
works that span
painting, sculpture,
installation, and
performance art. Born
in 1929, Kusama has
been a pioneering
figure in the art world
for decades, blending
elements of minimalism,
surrealism, and pop
art. Her signature
motifs include polka
dots, infinity nets,
and mirror rooms, which
she uses to explore
themes of obsession,
mental health, and the
concept of infinity.
Throughout her career,
she has lived with
mental illness,
voluntarily residing in
a psychiatric hospital
in Tokyo since the
1970s, which deeply
influences her artistic
expression.
